At Simple Fractal, we believe fixed price arrangements are only appropriate for non-bespoke work. When building a new software product, it's important to be nimble and respond to user feedback. Fixed price models require fixed specs upfront, which effectively means making the most important decisions with the least information.
What we've found works best are retainer-based structures. Here, you book a certain engineering bandwidth for a certain period of time - e.g. 2 engineers for 3 months.
Often, we will also exchange a portion of our cash fee for equity, since our goal is to partner long-term and help make the product successful.
